SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

South Sudan and Eritrea signed an agreement today to commence direct flights between the two countries. 

Paulos Kahsai the  Director General Of Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority today met with Director Of Aviation Safety Of South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority to plan the partnership between the two nations. 

According to reports from Eritrea Civil Aviation Authority, South Sudan Golden Wings Airline has already commence flights between the two countries. 

The two countries are 872 miles (1,400 km) apart. Given their geographical proximity, the two nations have realized the potential benefits of their partnership. In June last year, an agreement was signed to establish direct flights between Juba and Asmara, which would be essential for business, trade, and tourism.

After gaining independence from Sudan, South Sudan became the world youngest nation in the year 2011. The country aviation industry was relatively small up to date. 

South Sudan has only two international airports and Juba International Airport is one of them. Juba international airport handles local passengers and cargo and ever since the airport has been under development.

In the year 2016-2019 Juba International Airport was ranked among the worst airport in the world. 

Following investment from the government, the airport has seen some minor improvements, including the opening of a new passenger terminal in 2018. Turkish Airlines, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, and Uganda Airlines are some notable airlines operating flights to Juba.
