Nineteen '19' year old woman committed suicide in Lakes State, Rumbek East County

  The local police of Lakes State confirmed that a 19 year old woman committed suicide in the County of Rumbek East in the village of Meen-Wal and the police withheld the deceased name for unknown reason.  This is not the first time for the young girls to commit suicide in the State, the first case was reported to the authorities  two days ago after a young girl committed suicide in Wulu County.  While speaking to the Media, Police Spokesperson Maj. Elijah Mabor Makwach said that, the police are conducting thorough investigation on why there is a rampant rise of suicide amongst girls in Lakes State.  “We have recorded several cases of suicide with the most recent being a 19-year-old girl who committed a suicide in Meen-wal village in Rumbek East County and the investigation is still ongoing to identify the cause of the suicide because the cases are rising. Journalist, Garang John Still Under Arrest As Family Member Confirmed

Fake Facebook Post is making rounds on social media claiming that detained journalist Garang John has been released from detention, disregard the post because Garang John is still under detention as one of his family members confirmed it. 


South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation commonly known as SSBC Was the worked station of the detained journalist, he was whisked by the NSS Organs on January 16th 2023. 


The arrest of the journalist happened at a time when SSBC News journalists were being apprehended by notorious National Security Unit after a leaked footage showing president kiir in an embarrassing ordeal. 


National Security detained initially 6 Journalist from SSBCNEWS and after a week which was on 16th Jan. 2023, they detained journalist Garang John but two weeks three of the arrested journalists were released and four are still under detention including Garang John, Garang John's lawyer said. 


Facebook pages and some tabloid alleged that on 19th Feb. 2023 that Garang John was released from detention. 


A close family member of Garang John while speaking to the media said he was fine but still in custody. 


"Garang John is still in custody, we visited him. He is fine and has not yet been released," -John's Close family member said. 


While press freedom is under threat in South Sudan, journalists have faced numerous threats from security and unknown persons. Such a misleading post is a threat to journalists both active and in custody and should be treated with utmost caution before publishing or sharing.
