Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

President Kiir To Voluntarily Repatriate Refugees And IDPs Before Elections

President Kiir said that he is willing to voluntarily repatriate Internally Displaced Persons IDPs and refugees after he had a meeting with their representatives in Juba. 


The President, refugees and IDPs had a session under the theme of Forgiveness, Reconciliation, Peace, and Resettlement objectives was to foster national unity among the citizens of South Sudan. 


In his own words President Kiir said that: “With peace implementation moving towards the final phase where elections will end the transitional period, repatriating our people from the camps in neighboring countries should top our agenda,” President Kiir said. 


President Kiir also urged the Refugees and IDPs to come back home or if they lack a place to stay they should come and stay in Juba. 


President Kiir also answered the question about security and safety , in which he gave his assurance that security will be in place upon their arrival. 


The president also requested the International Partners to support his government in reintegrating the IDPs and refugees back to their motherland. 


“For those who will opt to return to their habitual areas of residence, the government will provide security and would work jointly with partners to organize logistics around what is needed to resettle successfully in those areas,” President Kiir said. 


He finalized his speech by giving directives to all of the States Officials to allocate land to the returnees. 


“Equally, for those who can not go back to their areas of residence, we have spoken to authorities in states where IDPs camps are located to set aside land to resettle them.’ President Kiir added.
