Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

Over 200 Houses And Granaries Burnt To Ashes In Lafon County Fire Outbreak

Over 200 hundred houses have been burnt to ashes in Lafon County leaving over 1,000 people homeless. 

Mr. Magisto Ukachi Agweri Lafon County Commissioner said that fire broke out in one of the villages of Lotobok Boma when children were trying to prepare breakfast in the absence of their parents. 

“The households that burned are 213 and there are other small houses including granaries that have not been counted. The situation of those affected is now dire because they lost all the food they harvested,” he said. “The homeless people are now sheltering at Longiro Primary School and others are at the health facility.” Magisto said. 

Mr. Magisto the commissioner of Lafon said that the fire spread first because it was blown by strong winds.

Law maker Angelo Ayongyang who is the current area Member of Parliament confirmed the incident and said the situation of the homeless is growing worst and they need immediate assistance. 

“It is really unfortunate and the victims are now suffering because all the harvest they stored has been destroyed. I call on humanitarian agencies to rescue the situation,” he said. “Yesterday (Monday), I called the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) and they said they will send an assessment team.” Ayongyang said. 

He further said that: “A similar fire also razed properties in Imehejek last week.” 

Lafon is a county in Eastern Equatoria State of South Sudan. The largest town is Lafon. Lafon County is located in South Sudan.
