SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Five Killed and 11 Others Critically Wounded In Lakes State Inter-communal Clashes

Lakes State Authorities said that 5 people have been killed and eleven others are critically wounded in Awerial County. 

The officials further stated that they have apprehended 45 people who were involved in the clashes between Koc-Acol and Koc-Wol clans. 

The two clans fought over the ownership of Makoi Cattle Camp . The violence started last week but was curbed over the weekend. 

Lakes State acting Information Minister Mr. William Koji while speaking to the media said that the government will punish those responsible.

“The organized forces in Lakes State have restored calm and stability in Awerial county and about 45 suspects linked to the clashes over the contested cattle camp have been arrested and more suspects are being searched by the government-organized forces," he said. "After the arrest of more people, there shall be screening for those who got involved and those who did not get involved and the actual judgment will take its course immediately." William Koji said. 

He further stated that: “In Awerial County, we shall continue to engage with the community leaders, and intellectuals to make sure that such an incident does not repeat itself anywhere in Lakes State." 

Mr. Deng Abraham who is also the Awerial County Clerk said that the situation is being managed by the government and buffer zone have been created. 

Awerial county is bordering Terekeka county of central equatoria state to the south, Bor South of Jonglei state to east, yirol east county to the north, yirol west county to the north west.
