SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Clashes Between Luacjang And Tonj East County Claim Lives Of 5 People And 18 Others Left Wounded

Authorities in Lakes State said that the clashes between Pakam of Rumbek North County and Luacjang Community of Tojlnj East County have claim the lives of 5 people leaving 18 Others critically wounded. 

The Heavy Clashes raptured on Tuesday in the middle of the day and the villages of Makuei and Payak was the center of the clashes. 

Mr. William Kirjiok Acting Lakes State Information Minister while addressing the media said that, armed groups from Luacjang Community In Tonj East attacked villages in Rumbek North County. 

“There was an attack on the Pakam community today (Tuesday) which left 5 people dead and 18 wounded," he said. “The attackers came from the Luacjang community of Tonj East County. They have been pushed back towards the northern part of Rumbek North County and the fighting is ongoing.” -William said. 

The information Minister further called for a dialogue between the warring communities and asked the leaders of both communities to find a solution immediately. 

Police Chief Inspector James Nak said that the fighting is still ongoing in the areas of Makuei and Payak villages. 

“The community of Tonj East County attacked the Pakam community of Rumbek North County on Tuesday afternoon and they are still fighting in Makuei and Payak villages,” he said. “We have the number of 5 people confirmed dead and the more than 18 wounded have been brought to Rumbek North County Hospital with serious gunshot wounds.” -Inspector James said.
