Presidents Kiir and Ruto Direct Mediation Teams to Resolve Outstanding Issues for Tumaini Initiative, Paving Way for Regional Stability

  President Kiir of South Sudan Hosting President Ruto of Kenya in J1.  President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan and Kenya’s President Dr. William Ruto have instructed their respective mediation teams to resolve any remaining issues under the Tumaini Initiative within a two-week timeframe, ahead of a final signing. This directive follows a high-level meeting in Juba, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and strengthening bilateral ties. Kenya's National Security Advisor, Dr. Monica Juma, highlighted that the two leaders agreed to secure regional support for the Tumaini Initiative. They encouraged IGAD to mobilize resources and secure backing from the TROIKA countries to ensure the initiative's full implementation. President Kiir has urged the UN to support South Sudan in its endeavours to develop a robust agricultural system to improve food production.


Kiir spoke in a meeting with the visiting Director-General of FAO Qu Dongyu, the President of International Fund for Agriculture Development Dr. Alvaro Lario, and the Executive Director of WFP Cindy McCain in Juba on Tuesday.


Agriculture Minister Josephine Joseph Lagu said the UN team is in the country to assess food security situation and the situation of the people fleeing the Sudanese conflict.


Dr. Alvaro Lario of IFAD said they are in South Sudan to strengthen collaborative efforts towards improving food production, through new technologies and new investments.


The Acting Foreign Minister said the government is providing a conducive environment for the UN and other humanitarian agencies to move freely to all parts of the country.


Leaders from FAO, IFAD and WFP say immediate action and investment in resilience is needed to avert food crisis.
