Presidents Kiir and Ruto Direct Mediation Teams to Resolve Outstanding Issues for Tumaini Initiative, Paving Way for Regional Stability

  President Kiir of South Sudan Hosting President Ruto of Kenya in J1.  President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan and Kenya’s President Dr. William Ruto have instructed their respective mediation teams to resolve any remaining issues under the Tumaini Initiative within a two-week timeframe, ahead of a final signing. This directive follows a high-level meeting in Juba, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and strengthening bilateral ties. Kenya's National Security Advisor, Dr. Monica Juma, highlighted that the two leaders agreed to secure regional support for the Tumaini Initiative. They encouraged IGAD to mobilize resources and secure backing from the TROIKA countries to ensure the initiative's full implementation. Additionally, a key project discussed was the construction of an 11-kilometer road connecting Nadapal and Nakodok, intended to facilitate trade and movement between the nations. The newly appointed National Finance Minister was talked to urgently address the inflation in the country by President Kiir. 


President Kiir made the directives during the swearing in ceremony of Dr. Bak Barnaba Chol Bak on Friday. 


The Head of State told the new Minister to stay focused on the job and "not to accept being intimidated by those people who want to run away with public money".


President Kiir assured the new Minister of his absolute cooperation as he tackled the economic reforms agenda.


Minister Bak said he will work to rein on the inflation, while paying salaries and wages on time, saying the SSP was undervalued and promising a strong response to the country's economic crisis.


The oath taking ceremony was officiated by Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut.


Dr. Bak Barnaba Chol was appointed on Thursday replacing former Minister Dr. Dier Tong Ngor who has been at the helm of the finance docket since 2022.
