SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

Imatong State Rebel Officer Arrested


The rebel commander under the leadership of Dr. Riek Machar was  caught in Imatong state. Mr. Oharanya who is also commanding the Torit and Magwi areas.

The Rebel Commander Mr. Aharanya  located in Imatong state, has admitted that he is willing to join the government in developing the country he further added that “Though my mind was already made up to return home, I was already leaving the rebel base and headed to Ayaci on November 6 2017 but on my way, I was caught and arrested and taken to Magwi SPLA Headquarters where I was arrested, investigated and later transferred to Torit. I am ready to work with the government. Outside there where I have left, life is terrible. Hunger among difficult things," This is the message from Mr. Oharanya to Journalist in State Mansion in Torit.


Governor Tobiolo Alberio Oromo told the Press that he instructed the army Commander in Torit to immediately transfer the captive to Juba.

Aharanya said that most of the rebel soldiers are ready and willing to join the government but are awaiting orders from their leader, Dr. Riak Machar to leave the bush.

Brig.Aharanya left the government in July 2017 while he was a Wildlife Officer with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He said his decision to return and choose to stay with the government is final.
