Finance Minister Fires Head Of National Revenue Authority

Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, the Minister of Finance has fired Dr. Olympio Attipoe the Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority.

In Ministerial Order 08/2019 issued today, Mr. Salvatore said the Deputy Commissioner General will act in the lead role.

No reasons were given for termination of Dr. Olympio’s services.

Dr. Olympio recently fell out with senior government officials after he distanced the National Revenue Authority away from a scam approved by the Minister of Finance.

The fraudulent business scheme was engineered by head of Traders’ Union Ayii Duang in which all businesses in South Sudan would have been required to register. Foreign businesses were to register with $100 USD and locals with 10,000 SSP. Ayii was to collect the money.

The scheme was approved by the Minister of Finance Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, the commandant of SSNP Traffic Directorate General Kon John Akot, Director for Immigration, Passports and Nationality LTGEN John Akot Maluth, Director of Custom Services MGEN Akol Ayii Madut and the chair of NLA’s Finance and Economic Planning Committee David Nailo Mayo.

The scheme fell apart two weeks ago after the Deputy Mayor of Juba Thiik Thiik Mayardit objected to the plan and Dr. Olympio declared it illegal. Dr. Olympio said, only the National Revenue Authority is mandated by law to collect taxes from businesses and traders in South Sudan.
