Top Opposition General Joins Government Forces in South Sudan

‎A senior opposition army officer has left his group and joined the government army in South Sudan. Brigadier General Adnan Alex Boboya, who was part of the SPLA-IO (the main opposition army), said he has decided to support peace and work with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), which is the national army. ‎ ‎Speaking in Yei River County, Gen. Boboya said, “I am doing this for the good of my people and my country. It is time for peace. We, as soldiers, should protect our communities, not fight them.” ‎ ‎Government army leaders welcomed him and encouraged other opposition fighters to stop fighting and talk about peace. ‎ ‎This comes just days after over 600 SPLA-IO soldiers also joined the government side. ‎ ‎But some people are worried that these changes could cause more problems for the peace agreement signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar.  ‎ ‎There are also reports that Riek Machar is being kept at home and not allowed to move...

Dr. Riek Machar Removed Adar State SPLM-IO Governor

Dr. Riek Machar removed Adar State Governor and his counterpart for failing to stop the fighting between civilians and the SPLM-IO armed forces 
Governor Stephen Pal Kun was replaced immediately by Stephen Loma in a decree on August 5 by Dr. Riek Machar.  
The deputy governor of Adar State was also replaced by Koang Ruot Luach. 
Deputy SPLM-IO Manawa Peter Gatkuoth said that “The changes are definitely connected to the recent incidents in Mawut town. When people die, a decision has to be made.”
The decree came after armed youths fought with the SPLM-O fighters loyal to Dr. Riek Machar.

The National Security Service (NSS) announced the move, stating that reintegrating the defectors into the government army is essential for stability and peace. ‎ ‎David John Kumuri, NSS spokesman, emphasized the importance of this process, saying, ‎"This reintegration is key to reducing violence and ensuring security across the country." ‎ ‎This marks the third mass defection of SPLA-IO members in recent weeks, following clashes in Nasir, Upper Nile State, last month.
