SPLA-IO Faction Rejects New Western Bahr el Ghazal Governor Amid Leadership Dispute

Hon. Emmanuel Primo Ukello, WBGS newly appointed Governor.

Top news:

A section of the SPLA- IO rejects the newly appointed Governor of Western Bahr El Ghazal State.

The rejection of the governor has led to heightened tension in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan, following the replacement of Sarah Cleto, a governor appointed by the SPLM-IO, with Emmanuel Primo Okello.

The reshuffle, initiated by First Vice President Riek Machar and approved by President Salva Kiir, has sparked resistance within the SPLM-IO ranks, particularly from Major General Majok Thalwa Thalwa, commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade.

Maj. Gen. Majok Thalwa has ordered SPLA-IO forces to block the new governor from entering the Jur River area, warning of severe consequences for noncompliance.

This opposition reflects deeper dissatisfaction within the SPLM-IO about decision-making processes, with local leaders feeling excluded from consultations.

The move has also highlighted the fragility of the peace agreement and the challenge of maintaining unity within opposition factions.

Despite these tensions, President Kiir proceeded with Okello's inauguration, urging leaders to prioritize peace and stability ahead of the upcoming elections.
