Rumors of Kiir Succession Conference in Rumbek Rejected by SPLM

Top trending news:

Information has been circulating on social media that SPLM was planning a high-level party meeting in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State, this month to discuss its reorganization and the Kiir succession.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) has denied reports of a planned succession conference in Rumbek, which was rumored to discuss potential successors to South Sudan's President Salva Kiir.

Officials from the SPLM clarified that there is no such conference scheduled and dismissed the speculation as misinformation.

SPLM Secretary for Mobilization and Political Affairs, Mr. Santo Malek brushed off the allegations by saying that.

“Anything to do with the party gathering, a meeting, or a conference of any sort has to start from the National Secretariat. We don’t have any such information,” Mr. Malek said.

“We don’t have official information from the leadership. I even talked to the Secretary-General (Peter Lam Both) about this and he said there was nothing like that. It is the SPLM Political Bureaus which directs, but there is nothing like that.” Mr. Malek Added.

These rumors likely stem from ongoing political tensions within South Sudan as various leaders prepare for potential transitions in leadership, especially with upcoming elections.

President Kiir has been in power since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, and discussions around his succession have occasionally surfaced.

However, the SPLM's recent statement emphasizes its stance against any unofficial narratives surrounding a leadership transition conference.
