Presidents Kiir and Ruto Direct Mediation Teams to Resolve Outstanding Issues for Tumaini Initiative, Paving Way for Regional Stability

  President Kiir of South Sudan Hosting President Ruto of Kenya in J1.  President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan and Kenya’s President Dr. William Ruto have instructed their respective mediation teams to resolve any remaining issues under the Tumaini Initiative within a two-week timeframe, ahead of a final signing. This directive follows a high-level meeting in Juba, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and strengthening bilateral ties. Kenya's National Security Advisor, Dr. Monica Juma, highlighted that the two leaders agreed to secure regional support for the Tumaini Initiative. They encouraged IGAD to mobilize resources and secure backing from the TROIKA countries to ensure the initiative's full implementation. Additionally, a key project discussed was the construction of an 11-kilometer road connecting Nadapal and Nakodok, intended to facilitate trade and movement between the nations. President Kiir has directed the National Health Ministry to double its efforts to deliver quality healthcare services to the people of South Sudan. 

 

President Kiir gave the directives after receiving a comprehensive report from the Minister of Health Yolanda Awel Deng on the health status in the country.


Minister Yolanda also briefed the President on her recent participation in the World Health Assembly meeting in Geneva. 


She called for domestic funding to address the current pressure on the healthcare system, following the influx of returnees and refugees into the country from Sudan.


The Minister called on the public to embrace safer living by maintaining personal hygiene to mitigate cases of cholera as the rainy season begins.


The health sector in the country is facing lots of changes. The country has poor access to health services due to an acute health workforce shortage, inadequate health infrastructure and poor health service utilization, the country has poor health indicators. 


Its maternal, infant and child mortality rates are some of the highest in the world and life expectancy is low, at 56.5 years
