Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

President Kiir has said South Sudan remain committed to engaging the fighting generals to stop the on-going destructive conflict in Sudan.


This comes Monday when he met with the Deputy Chairman of the Sudan's Sovereign Council Malik Agar Eyre in Juba on Monday.


General Agar briefed President Kiir on the current security situation in Sudan, and his recent diplomatic tour to Uganda and Kenya to bolster regional efforts for peace.


General Agar underscored the importance of Africans solutions to Africans problems, calling for harmonization of the Jeddah, African Union and IGAD initiatives to quickly address the ongoing conflict in Sudan.


Speaking to reporters, Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs Tut Gatluak Manime reiterated President Kiir's commitment to consolidate efforts to finding a lasting solution to the crisis in Sudan.


The two leaders stressed the need for strict adherence to cease-fire to calm the situation in Sudan.


The meeting is a reminder of the critical role President Kiir is playing towards ending the war in Sudan and achieving lasting stability in the region.


The ongoing attacks in Sudan  have resulted into unlawful killings, beatings, sexual violence, lootings, and the burning of villages.


According to a report published by AMNESTY, It is shameful that people in Sudan are still living in fear every single day. 


The government of Sudan has yet to show that it is willing or able to protect civilians, or to hold perpetrators accountable.
