SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Kiir on Thursday paid homage to veteran politician General Joseph Lagu Yanga in his residence in Juba and wished him good health.


Presidential Affairs Minister Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin said President Kiir is thankful to Gen. Lagu for his outstanding leadership and tremendous role in championing the liberation struggle for the freedom of South Sudanese.


The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Josephine Lagu said the family is appreciative of the coming of the President to interact with their beloved father.


The 94-year old Former Anyanya leader Joseph Lagu encouraged President Kiir to carry on with the good work of restoring peace and uniting the country.


Joseph Lagu (born 26 November 1929 in a hamlet called Momokwe in Moli, Northern region of Madiland, about 80 miles south of Juba, Sudan, currently South Sudan) is a South Sudanese military figure and politician. The former anyanya leader hails from Madi ethnic group of Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan.


In the period 1978–1979, Lagu served as the second President of the High Executive Council of the autonomous region of Southern Sudan.


On the 4th June 1963 he defected from the Army and joined the South Sudan resistance movement against the Government of Sudan and on September 1963 he formed the Anynya movement.
