SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

President Kiir on Friday last week received a briefing on the general situation in the Bahr El Ghazal region. 


Governors present during the briefing are: Lakes State Governor Riny Tueny Mabor,  Warrap Governor Manhiem Bol Malek, Northern Bahr El Ghazal Governor Tong Aken Ngor and Western Bahr El Ghazal Deputy Governor Joseph Zacharia.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues the Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Tong Aken Ngor noted that the security situation in the entire region is stable and that political parties are conducting their activities without any hindrances.


During the meeting, the Governors extended an invitation to the President to address a political rally in Wau.


Bahr El Gazal can also be spelled as Bahr el-Ghazal, English Gazelle River, river, South Sudan, chief western affluent of the Nile River.


It is 445 miles (716 km) long and joins the Mountain Nile (Baḥr al-Jabal) through Lake No, from which it flows eastward as the White Nile (Baḥr al-Abyaḍ).


Warrap is considered as the poorest and greatest poverty stricken state in the region both for adults and children in South Sudan.
