Russia to Open Embassy in Juba: A New Chapter in South Sudan–Russia Relations

‎ ‎In a significant diplomatic move, the Russian Federation is preparing to open its embassy in South Sudan between September and October 2025, marking a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. ‎ ‎The news was confirmed by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Chol Tong Mayay, during a farewell event for a South Sudanese ICT delegation that recently attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025). ‎ ‎A Long-Awaited Diplomatic Presence ‎The planned opening of a Russian embassy in Juba is seen as a long-overdue development in South Sudan-Russia relations.  ‎ ‎Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Russia has maintained diplomatic accreditation to Juba from its embassy in Khartoum.  ‎ ‎The establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in the South Sudanese capital is expected to significantly boost cooperation, streamline consular services, and facilitate more direct political, economic, and cultural exchanges....

Prominent members of South Sudan Opposition Alliance agreed to hand over the Governorship of Jonglei State to the Government in a new arrangements. 


South Sudan Opposition Alliance 'SSOA' has agreed to swap Jonglei State Governorship with SPLM and agreed to take the position of the Deputy Governor.


The reason for the swapping of the position was to address the never ending crisis in Jonglei State. 


While addressing the media, Hon. Gabriel Changson Chan a senior member of 'SSOA' and also the current Minister of Higher Education said, SSOA is contented by the new arrangement with the government since it will help restore peace in Jonglei State. 


According to the new arrangement, SSOA will take up a Ministerial position in the National Government and a Special Envoy position and the deputy Governor of Jonglei.


President Kiir is expected to effect the changes in the coming days.


The South Sudan Opposition Alliance is a coalition of political parties and armed groups in South Sudan that are opposing the regime of President Kiir. 


South Sudan Opposition Alliance was formed in February 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by nine groups.
