SPLA-IO Accused of Detaining Civilian Boats, Demanding $4,000 Along Sobat River ‎

‎ Boat ferrying civilians  Nasir, Upper Nile State  ‎Authorities in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, have accused forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In Opposition (SPLA-IO) of detaining civilian riverboats and demanding ransom-like payments of up to $4,000 from traders and passengers along the Sobat River. ‎ ‎According to Nasir County Commissioner James Gatwech Joak, several boats traveling from Matar in Nasir County to Malakal were intercepted by SPLA-IO soldiers in Yakuach, an area in Nyirol County, Jonglei State. ‎ ‎“Our traders paid local taxes to SPLA-IO in Mandeng before setting off. But on reaching Yakuach, they were detained again and told to pay an additional four thousand U.S. dollars,” Commissioner Gatwech said. ‎ ‎He explained that the detained boat operators and traders were reportedly held for four days while armed men demanded more payments.  ‎ Some of the passengers were women, children, and patients traveling for medical treatment in Malaka...

PRESIDENT KIIR RECEIVES SECURITY BRIEFING FROM WESTERN EQUATORIA STATE ACTING GOVERNOR ‎



‎President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday received a detailed security briefing from the Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State, Hon. Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, during a meeting held at the State House, Juba.

‎The Acting Governor informed the President that Western Equatoria is currently enjoying a peaceful environment, with civilians conducting their daily activities safely and without fear. 

‎WES Acting Governor Hon. Badagbu highlighted the combined efforts of the State government, security agencies, and community leaders in promoting peace and stability across the State.

‎"We are working closely with all stakeholders community elders, youth groups, and security organs to ensure that the hard-earned peace in Western Equatoria is protected and strengthened," said Acting Governor Badagbu. 

‎He further said that "Our people are actively engaged in agriculture, trade, and social life, and we are committed to maintaining this atmosphere."

‎President In response, President Kiir welcomed the positive security developments and applauded the State leadership for its tireless efforts in preserving peace.

‎"I commend the Acting Governor and the entire leadership of Western Equatoria for their steadfast commitment to peace and stability," President Kiir stated. 

‎"The progress being reported today is a reflection of good governance and dedication to the wellbeing of our people. The national government remains committed to supporting all States in their efforts to ensure that peace is not only maintained but also translated into tangible development."

‎The meeting underscored the government's broader commitment to monitoring and supporting peace initiatives nationwide. 

‎President Kiir reiterated that sustained peace and security are crucial foundations for national development, reconciliation, and the successful conduct of the upcoming elections.

‎The Office of the President emphasized that similar engagements with State leaders will continue to ensure a coordinated national approach to peacebuilding, security enhancement, and service delivery to the citizens of South Sudan.
