‎During their meeting in Juba, the two leaders discussed pressing political and security issues affecting both nations and the broader East African region.

‎The discussions covered a range of topics, including South Sudan’s upcoming elections, ongoing peace efforts, and the need for deeper economic collaboration between the two neighboring countries.

‎Focus on Political and Security Stability

‎South Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ramadan Mohammed Abdallah Goc stated that the meeting aimed to enhance cooperation in multiple sectors while addressing the political developments currently unfolding in the country.

‎With South Sudan preparing for its first post-independence elections, Uganda’s continued support is seen as vital in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

‎On the security front, Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Cooperation John Mulimb urged that peace and security remain top priorities.

‎South Sudan has faced persistent inter-communal conflicts, particularly in regions like Jonglei and Upper Nile states, where peace efforts including engagement with local armed groups are ongoing. Uganda, a key regional player, has previously mediated in South Sudan’s conflicts and continues to advocate for a stable political transition.

‎Boosting Economic and Trade Relations

Beyond security, both leaders acknowledged the importance of economic ties between their nations.

Uganda is one of South Sudan’s largest trading partners, supplying agricultural products, manufactured goods, and essential services. With recent challenges such as currency fluctuations and economic instability affecting trade, both governments are keen to implement measures that enhance cross-border trade and ensure economic resilience.

‎Officials say the meeting is expected to pave the way for joint initiatives, including potential infrastructure projects, trade facilitation, and security cooperation along shared borders.

‎A Step Toward Regional Peace and Integration

‎The talks between Kiir and Museveni come at a critical time for the region, with South Sudan working to consolidate peace under the Revitalized Peace Agreement, while Uganda continues to engage in regional security efforts.

‎Their discussions highlight the importance of regional partnerships in addressing shared challenges and fostering long-term stability.

‎As South Sudan moves toward its historic elections, Uganda’s role in supporting peace efforts and economic stability remains crucial.

The outcomes of this meeting are expected to reinforce diplomatic ties and set the stage for greater collaboration in governance, security, and economic development.
